Never alone

There has always been something watching
From afar but sometimes near
I can feel it when I'm walking
Suddenly cumbersome and drunk on fear

In my mind I see the silhouette
Stretched out like a spiders web
An anxious transitory shape
Like black smoke with a roving head
That prickle feeling behind my neck
Is fright amounting with no ebb
Without the want to turn and face it
This stalking thing remains instead

It's like a shadow following
It's the footsteps I have left behind
It's a tail shapeless danger
Hunting with a predatory mind

Why am I it's sole fixation
How exactly will this end
I dare not look in it's direction
This thing...
This fear is mankind's oldest friend
