Image for the poem Shards

Shards

Fools seen through telescopes
Dissecting love
In similes and metaphors
Cliches and overused adjectives

Her skirt's fraying
He's praying
On skin uncovered
Bathed blue
By lights in the space of
Broken mirrors
And treasured trash
Because
"Love was here"
They say.

Fools inked and sinking
Blinking
At neon signs
Fed up moon and stars long dead

He's slipping
Inside
She's shaking, shivering -
Shattering -
Later when she's sleeping
He'll be slipping
Away...

Fools who dance
And never get sick of the dark
Runaways sipping
Milkshakes and
Popping
Cherries

He's asking
She's whispering
Nobody knows
Like it matters.

The mirror's already broken.
