What Are You Afraid Of: The Truth
Why are you so afraid to know the truth?
Are you not the one asking the questions?
So why do the words drip from your
lips so slowly and taste of fear;
bitter and metallic?
The questions came easily at first,
pouring from your mouth in a deluge
of jumbled words and laughter;
Both serious and inconsequential.
You have your answer.
The hints were all too easy.
You know and yet you remain silent,
the truth dancing dangerously close
to the tip of your tongue.
You swallow it back, like bile,
sending it to a place it will not
be easily recalled and move on,
leaving your questions for another time
out of fear that the truth will ooze out
like sludge between your teeth;
sour and dark.
Why?
Are you afraid to see him in a different light?
To hear the words spoken aloud will shatter
the stained-glass image you dared create.
Are you afraid you won't condemn him
and see yourself as a monster?
A creature willing to dance with the devil for love?
I think that you are.
You open your mouth
and the glass shatters.
Are you not the one asking the questions?
So why do the words drip from your
lips so slowly and taste of fear;
bitter and metallic?
The questions came easily at first,
pouring from your mouth in a deluge
of jumbled words and laughter;
Both serious and inconsequential.
You have your answer.
