They may hear anger in your voice
and assume it is towards them
never once asking if anything is wrong with you

Attitude is contagious. As much as I hated my career in sales, one thing I learned is that smiling at people, even when you struggle to fake it can lead to improving your mood when someone you greet smiles back at you. It certainly improves sales so it is no surprise that whatever mood you display will be caught like he germs of a sick person coughing cold germs in your face...
