The Real Thing
Do you want love
Unconditional love
Do you want loyalty
Loyalty without question
Do you want warmth
True companionship
Shared interests
In running and walking
In receiving commitment
Protection and joy
Shared play and happiness
Never a cross word
Never an argument
No fighting
Somebody always pleased to see you
Who sees their duty as pleasing you
Never two faced
No danger of infidelity
A life long companion
Who will always love you
No matter what
For better, for worse
For richer, for poorer
In sickness and health
So long as ye both shalt live
If this is what
You really and truly want
Then;
Get a fucking dog
Humans are ok
But you cant beat the real thing
Unconditional love
Do you want loyalty
Loyalty without question
Do you want warmth
True companionship
Shared interests
In running and walking
In receiving commitment
Protection and joy
Shared play and happiness
Never a cross word
Never an argument
No fighting
Somebody always pleased to see you
Who sees their duty as pleasing you
Never two faced
No danger of infidelity
A life long companion
Who will always love you
No matter what
For better, for worse
For richer, for poorer
In sickness and health
So long as ye both shalt live
If this is what
You really and truly want
Then;
Get a fucking dog
Humans are ok
But you cant beat the real thing

Re. The Real Thing
Ahh, love it! Dogs are the best!!! I've had a few and they really are the best friends forever... Reminds me of a poem I wrote about 33 years ago called "Even the Best of Us" for my dog Max and my grandmother. Both were dying at the same time. It's here http://deepundergroundpoetry.com/poems/29181-even-the-best-of-us/

Thanks for an awesome read. There's a certain magic woven throughout.
The end made me laugh but I must confess to have found all that in a human. (Although we do have little arguments here n there)
I got lucky. Always good to read your work, David. Take care

Cats work just as well. :) Animals are fantastic at showing unconditional love. If only it was easier to find it in humans... *sigh*
I agree with others, the ending was the best. Brought a smile.

maybe so - my son is a cat person and that was his response too - I just prefer dogs - not entirely sure why :-)

It's all good, we all have our preferences, I think what is most important is that we share the understanding of the love animals demonstrate and respect that fact alone. I don't think type determines capability or not... All types of animals can love just as all types of humans can. :)
