carnivorous woods...
I was little,
but I knew lots of
big words...
I remember, for
instance, crying
during a picnic,
with my mum
sighing and saying,
"no, dear,
I said the
trees are
coniferous...."

LOL! I can just see them with their branched mouths wide open and coned teeth coming for you, Paul!
Great memory to share. Well done!

I like the poem as well. It has a lot of momentum as it goes from line to line. When one thought morphs into another, I feel flung into the new situation. When we go, for example, from "I was little, but I knew lots of big words" to crying during a picnic so rapidly, the effect is pretty exciting and interesting. The effect is similar when the situation morphs from a sighing mother to the surrounding coniferous trees.
The use of the topic of words you knew when you were little as a way to enclose a painful memory is striking too.

thank you. I try to write as though mimicking
my own speech patterns, which involve many
pauses, sudden bursts of speaking too fast,
and then deliberate attempts of slowing it all
down, the general effect being quite unattractive,
I guess. of course, it's impossible to replicate
on the page, so I merely paraphrase..:)

Ahhh, dartford, luv ~ :-*
Why do I suspect you gave your mother many such sighing moments? :-* You invariably know precisely how to write a thing to elicit a smile. You have a rare gift, luv. :-*
(I know you'll say somewhat evasive of my admiration, but know here tis quite genuine appreciation for you, dartford, luv.)

Dammit, you had a greenie-hippie mother who knew big words and trees. I always wanted one of them!
I didn't know enough big words and so on my eleventh birthday I bought a dictionary. It wasn't big enough and I took it back. The bigger one I wanted cost all my birthday money and four more dollars... my father thought I was very strange but gave me the money anyway.

the trees are going to get ye - I remember as a child being frightened by the woods near my home - probably had too many stories told to me as a child about the 'deep, dark woods' :-)
