Cedar House
There she sits, all aged and tattered, in a field so fair
Small and sturdy, made from cedar walls, the old house sits
Hidden well, the scent’s revealed, so crispy fresh, it starts to rain and then it comes
as music to my ears.
Gentle rain drops settling softly on every leaf,
like emeralds.
Often times, on windy days, the orange blossoms blow amidst the wind,
The heavenly scent is sent down the street, making everyone's day a little sweeter.
But when summer comes, the wild onions emerge,
Which brings an even bigger surprise, when used in her cooking.
The trees are legendary past,
for these tresses of trees are bound together, so securely,
as if afraid.
Probably when hurricanes were passing by,
trying to knock them over,
the trees held each other, more tightly, as if in fear,
and they grew together that way.
winter is dead and gone, and things seem to calm upon the place,
you could see it in the trees.
Jetting outward, carrying a bundle of plump oranges ready to be plucked,
were later squeezed into my cup, for breakfast.
When it came time what for the berries to be harvested,
she wisely save them all.
they were later used for jam on butter biscuits, so savory to my mouth,
I couldn't get enough.
Not to mention her homemade tea, tastes so sweet,
Like candy to me.
But wandering up and down the property is what I most enjoyed,
to see were young girl walked long ago.
Here I see Mama’s stories come to life,
a horse’s hooves, galloping by, so fast
it was almost silent against the whispering grass.
Old and rusty, paints a’ peeling,
Grandpa starts up his stubborn tractor, which never stops grumbling
by making a hubbub and clamor,
reluctantly gone out to do its job once again.
Grandma calls us in for dinner,
Grandpa watches the football game,
When their dog, Tater, stops licking your face and falls asleep,
you know the day was well spent.
As we drive away and look back
on the old Cedar house,
the trees wave goodbye,
the horse neighs,
the grass whispers
and the house smiles.
