Carry

From a drought-riddled stream
she carries water upon shoulders
burned black when her mother still lived,

her bare feet widened from miles trod,
and the weight of woven reed baskets
that quench the family working the fields

when her youth and daylight fades,
and fire flares bright in the clay hearth
until the next day--
