CRISIS IN THE KREMLIN !

Why did Gorbachev make peace?
Why did Russia end the Cold War in the end of the 1980s?
As we examine the context of Gorbachev's decision-making,  
We discover that there was a real crisis in the Kremlin.
 
That crisis is what FORCED Gorbachev to end the Cold War !!
And to give up Eastern Europe and to require that the Soviet Union split up!
That crisis also led to the superficial "fall" of Communism in Russia,  
And finally to Gorbachev's on-the-surface-only resignation.  
(It's hard to believe, but he's STILL in power behind the scenes.  
His puppet Putin is just a "front man.")
 
After such a build-up, you must be asking this question:
JUST WHAT IS THIS "CRISIS IN THE KREMLIN"?
Thanks for asking! That's what I was trying to get you to do !!
It's like this:  
Ever since Russia got the atomic bomb in the late 1940s,
And then the nuclear bomb in the early 1950s,
Stalin and his successors have been planning to bomb America  
So that Russia can then take over Western Europe without interference.
 
But America has built a retaliatory arsenal,
Telling Russia, "If you bomb us, we'll bomb you back."
So both sides would definitely get wiped out.
This threat has held Russia back,
As a result, the Kremlin has been working around the clock
To find a way to destroy all three "legs" of our nuclear Triad,
 
Our retaliatory arsenal that is made up of three parts:
a) ICBMs,(Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles)  
b) SLBMs, (Submarine-Launched Ballistic Missiles) and  
c) Cruise Missiles on Strategic Bombers.
 
Why does Russia want to gain the ability to destroy  
All three legs of our defensive "Deterrent,"  our Triad?
Because, if Russia can do just that much,
Russia can then bomb us with impunity  - and WIN NUCLEAR WAR !  
 
By the time that Gorbachev came to power, in March 1985,
Russia had gained the ability to:
(1) destroy our ICBMs in their underground silos and  
(2) shoot down our Strategic Bombers, plus
(3) destroy 1/3 of our "Boomer" submarines,
For that's the portion that are in port at any time.
 
Plus, Russia had built an Anti-Ballistic Missile(ABM) system able to  
(4) intercept around 1,300 incoming nuclear warheads
From our 26 Boomer submarines at sea,  
Which was about 1/6 of the total number  
of warheads on our subs at that time.
 
In short, by 1985, Russia had gained the ability
to destroy 2 and a half legs of the three legs of our Triad !!!
So we were "on our last leg," so to speak!
 
But that wasn't good enuff.
For just that surviving half of the last leg  
means the warheads from 19 US Boomer subs or  
168 (warheads) x 19 for a total of  
3,192 incoming nuclear warheads.  
That's a lot of destructive power.
 
So Russia had to find a way to destroy  
those last 3,192 warheads or the subs they were on.
 
Building more ABMs and "Battle Management Stations"  
wasn't practical, it was technically too difficult.
Plus, a NATION-WIDE ABM system would be
An obvious -- a glaring --- violation of the 1972 ABM Treaty,
Which allows for only 100 ABMs (later amended to 200 ABMs).
 
So the Kremlin had to turn to its "back-up" solution,
Namely, Arms Control agreements !!
If the Kremlin could get America to DISARM itself,
to reduce by 25 the number of submarines America had,
That would be the equivalent of the Russian ABM system intercepting
All the warheads from all the missiles fired from 25 US subs!
 
THE TROUBLE IS THAT AMERICA WOULD BE UNWILLING
TO CUT BACK BY 25 SUBS AS LONG AS THE COLD WAR WAS GOING ON !!  
 
So that's the "crisis" that the Kremlin faced:
It had to choose between two hard choices.
Either (1) end the Cold War, etc, in order  
To get America to sign an Arms Control agreement
Requiring us to give up 25 submarines,
(So that Russia could then go ahead and bomb us),
 
Or else (2) The Kremlin would have to give up
The Stalinist dream of launching World War 3,
(For it would be too devastating  --  even suicidal).
 
PS: Yes, that does amount to a crisis.
An honest-to-goodness "Crisis in the Kremlin,"
Won't you agree?

Unfortunately, Gorbachev chose the wrong option,
Namely the deaths of 150 million American lives.
