A bittersweet Goodbye
Last night late, my Grampa died.
A few hours before, we had this
Exchange sittin by his side.
I was rubbin his arm in a tender carress.
He spoke, "Retha it's been so long since you touched me like that."
"I'd love a kiss."
He was somewhere between dream death and lucidness.
Retha, my Grandma, had passed some years before.
My Grandpa Pete, a man of God was sure he would meet her in his sweet reward.
I said "I sure love you Pee wee." her pet name for him.
"We will embrace soon and greeaat big!" I giggled some like she always did. "Heaven is another big adventure" Man! It was strange how much right then I was sure.
Leaned over and kissed him soft on his dry cracked lips.
He made a low happy moan.
A knowing smile crept over his sunkin
Face.
Curled his cold hand over my finger tips.
Small chuckle escaped his labored breath.
My Grandpa was not afraid, was quite looking forward to death.
He said "I love you Jennifer."
With a squeeze of his arm, "Oh i love you so too."
"Can you believe I get to meet my savior soon?" said he.
And you know, for him, I did.
He slipped back into "in and mostly out" of conscienceness.
I sat hours, holdin this huge mans now so small cool hand.
Had small talks about Jesus and the big G.
"Tell him i say hey!" I teased.
Grandpa grinned.
I prayed.
All night I prayed to his idea of God and Christ our Savior.
Asked them to let him pass easy, and to please, you know what kind of human being this is.
Greet him with the hand shake due this great man.
He has spent his long incredible life living according to your plan.
But to please let Grandma greet him first. With a great hug and lovers kiss he's waited so long to savour.
Please God, Christ, whoever.....
Grant him and me, .this one small favour.
Amen

calamitygin,
A touching sentiment to your grandpa. Much sorrow for your loss. I know your prayers were heard and granted.

I love this Jennifer. It very much reminds me of when my mom passed after years of pain and anguish. But she went with an amazing look of serenity and joy on her face just as her life flickered out. It seemed like a look of recognition, as if she was coming home to loved ones who preceded her, including my father who passed years before this. I might have been projecting my own wishful thinking, but who knows? She might also have gotten a glimpse of Heaven. She deserved it. In any case, I'm sure that God heard your prayer and welcomed your Grandpa with open arms. Thanks so much for sharing this!

I think they do, have that in between and see something we arent able to see. Hevean. Whatever religion, whatever you believe. I think there is most certainly the possibility of plurality of it. But when you are there, when someone is passing. I am sure, theres something.

" I know there is a God" My belief, unchanging and never wavering. He can do everything but fail. I know that through the night he welcomed your grampa home. I pray for the family and especially you Jen. I have lost all of my grandparents, my father and my mom is 86 years old with bladder cancer. I know that one day , God will to call her home as he shall all of us. To be absent from the body is to be with the lord. Grampa is home now. Be happy for him and be strong.
This was a truly beautiful tribute to a great man. I am quite moved.......

I believe too. Call myself christian, but study all scripture in and out of the bible. Dont know what the definitions are, but believe and am a woman of faith.
Open to the plurality of religious And spiritual existences.
I just know there is something else. You think its bullshit , dare you to say that after seeing my grampas smile.

Jennifer, I love how you said goodbye to him. You comforted him and he was not afraid. You helped him through this transition with your warmth and love. I can't imagine a better way to pass than with a loved one like you there by my side. This is a superb poem which will preserve your memory of his last hours. So beautiful and passionate. This poem showed the things I love the most about you. You are an angel.
Love and hugs,

Who knows what's next? We only know what's here.
And I like it when Good men are loved on Earth.
"grant him and me this one small favour"
You're a real human Jen.
Love to you as well.
