Then There's You

And then there’s you…
You, who wear your sex like a crown,
Yet serve it up daily
To the starving masses
Gathering beneath your table
In hopes some sweet morsel
Falls their way!
What is it you take with you?
…When that tarnishing silver
Proves naught but a burdensome hollow–
...When all those eyes
Begin to look elsewhere,
And you realize the fallacy
You’ve clung to the whole of your life
Has just traded you in
On a newer model…
A slightly fresher version
Of yesterday’s same ol’ same ol’
While you fade to
Some stagnant depiction
Founded on destitute tomorrow.

And then there’s you…
You, who only yesterday
Rolled yourself in ashes,
Yet stand today to sound
Love’s very trumpet!
Herald of a dream
Your very own making…
Do you even hear its sound?
More than just slightly off key–
A squawking I’d gladly drown
In the wails
Of my own suffering.
Loneliness would prove a stronger lover,
Emptiness, a much sounder refrain.
Silliness this is–
This paltry summoning
Of antiquated emotion
And ill-timed jests…
So, so surely you jest?

And then there’s you…
You, who concluded in youth
That Time would be a much better teacher,
But now, in Death’s graying shadows
Have only just begun to question if you
Could have been a better student.
You, who dared dance with Misery
Only to find her judgments
Less than sound,
Prejudice even;
And yet chose her company
Again and again…
Over family,
Over friends,
Over love.

You, who damned yourself
To believe that,
Rightly delineated,
Somewhere between the stupid
And the stubborn,
A mirror that never lies
Could reveal a much broader truth–
A much more needed truth…
Some mad-hatter wrinkle,
A pay-per-view sellout
That would pull you from the
Soul-sucking edge of oblivion
And greet you
With the wisdom of the Sages.

So now,
You peel your eyelids back,
Forcing yourself to look
Yet again...
...To a hunger never satisfied.
...To an aching never quelled.
To a sacrament, unattainable
Before those eyes.
Those eyes,
So full of condemnation,
So full of hate,
So utterly insatiable.
For then, there’s you.
