Counting the Stars

Your eyes watch the night as it grows darker and calls
As you kindle the fire that makes your humanity fall
Counting the stars up to numbers you could not dream to handle
You didn't see them flicker and die like a dollar store candle
Your hands reach higher than the pitch black space
But not high enough to touch God by the face
And your feet can walk on water, can wear the clouds as shoes
But you're careful not to fall and let your celestial body bruise
One slip, you're out and this game of Life is dead
At least you don't let the power to your head
Your mind thinks things that magically appear
You ears find ecstasy that no one can hear
Your legs walk a mile and don't feel a thing
And hearing your voice makes people cry when they hear angels sing
You find content, though, when your fire begins to grow
Larger, faster, deadlier than mere mortals could ever know
The bliss they seek when they call out your name
You murdered their trust in your quest for fame
Galaxies frown at your ignorance and petty tries
While everything in this plain existence dies.
