STREET OPERA IMPROMPTU
Behind me was a siren,
steadily, predatorily amplifying.
I was preparing
for the lording wail to sweep past me,
submerging me, as always, proudly,
self-consciously, into the pageantry of
human existence...
A woman looked back and said, "Oh no."
Her words dropped
like paper into a wastebasket.
I looked back
and saw that the ambulance
had stopped at a signal.
The siren had stopped also.
I continued to walk a few yards down
till I looked back again at
the return of humdrum traffic
where ONLY I SAW the tearful bride
burst out of the double doors which
receive our universal harm , heard
her keen sharply, watched her unveil herself
and open her white-winged arms
to stranger after stranger
kissing her in lustful lamentation.
