Southbound

Southbound. Straight down.
Into the earth from the sky.
Into myself for the millionth time.
To where it all began.

Southbound. Straight down.
Onto the earth from the sky.
Onto myself for the umpteenth time.
Upon which it all ends.

I've lost count of the holocausts
that I've caused.
The seething sutures and life
lost to ages of frost and dirt.
(It's the bones I keep finding)

I've lost count of the detritis
that find its way to my surface.
The doomsday rocks
that have fallen
and clocks that I keep rewinding.

Southbound. Straight down.
Into the earth from the sky.
Into myself for the millionth time.
To where it all began.

Southbound. Straight down.
Onto the earth from the sky.
Onto myself for the umpteenth time.
Upon which it all ends.

This weight is all that I can handle.
And craters are all that I can make.
Another tear for the oceans.
Another species at stake.

There is no shield large or strong enough
to protect from willed astral might.
No cave or chasm deep enough.
I'll be smoked and starved out in no time
and die as I've died before.
And be reborn only to destroy.
Not strengthened and gloriously
as was the Phoenix ploy.

(I am not a safe place to be...)
