To my future self
If I ever have a son or daughter, and they start to feel the pressure I once felt
I will let them
Dye there hair, blue, green, even pink if they desired it
I will let them cut it, shave it, straighten it
I will let them wear black eyeliner and lipstick
I will let them wear basketball shorts, or cute frilly skirts
I will let them wear hoodies and ripped black jeans
I will listen to them cry
Over "bitches", "assholes", and teachers, and the world, and about the universe
And everyday
I want to make a point of telling them
I love them
That I am proud of them
That they are strong, capable, and smart
Until they realize, and hopefully learn to accept
That they do not need to be called beautiful by the boy with the motorcycle
Or sexy by the girl who reeks of too much perfume
To be enough, just as they come.
