The Great War

I saw the fear in her eyes as she looked up at me
I guess she thought I'd kill her
but I was there to rescue her,
to rescue her from her sorrow
no matter how hard I tried to tell her I was the good guy
the look in her eyes never changed
it was as if she were born that way
I picked her up into my arms and put a blanket over her
We walked out of that place for the war was finally over and we were all free
she had been there long waiting, hoping, praying
yet she showed no joy of being free
I kept telling her we were free
but still no change in her eyes
yet as I put her down she looked up at me
a whispered thank you I am free, the great war is over
