Motion
Motion is at the heart of everything. All matter is energy vibrating slowly enough to be tangible, and all life moves through changes. From liquid to solid motion dominates the field of permanence. When I wake up in the afternoon the sun is already up and so the first motion I feel is the muscles tugging up from my feet. Before my eyes open I am aware of my feet, the flow of blood. Then comes the twitch of the Achilles nerve, sending the impulse up my calf, which I mentally follow. My body is primed to engage with the world prior to my mind being able to process. Motion has superseded the plans of the brain. It's easier to follow motion and mindfulness exhibits physiofeedback awareness. Attuned to the music of the body and blood, the tune of the nerves, the tiny motions the mind is free to wander. Motion captivates and cascading thoughts tumble, following one another effortlessly, tangentially branching off and rejoining the original stream. Tributaries, like the delta of the Fertile Crescent, these daily thoughts all follow an inexorable flow like the warm current from my heart. Motion triumphs timelessly. Within the immaterial, the murky world of thoughts, feelings, impulses is levity and gravitas. Upward and down to tense and release, tugging, pulling, body responses to feelings, neurological synapses firing, transferring and emotion is energy in motion. Introverts have told me the body is a vessel to carry the brain, the real driver, the real director, the ruler. But thought without motion is static. Extroverts speak to me of an animal sense, thinking from the body, the gut. Athletic Science Enthusiasts espouse that the brain serves as an air conditioning unit to draw heat away from the body and enable metabolism to function better. Clinical? Perhaps. But yogis, tantric priestesses, and sifus have also taught me a great deal of mind-body duality transcendence from yoga, tantra and martial arts. And in freeform dance is the most freeform of thought. Mind in motion. I have been known to dance and rhyme freestyle for hours straight, as is the regular daily exercise of a Hip Hop Scholar. Mind-Body Transcendence. The motion, the emotion is what leads. And from such distance from a problem arises the illumination, the a-ha moments. "I never tried to figure shit. Just let my amygdala get with it. Ripping 'til I hit the skids." Motion guides and by proxy of necessity forces us to reshape ourselves and the world. The mind and body, the world around us, and the world within naturally strives towards balance. In homeostasis the settling and clearing of body and mind during moments of pure relaxation, proper rest, motion spreads as heat, coalescing in the air around us, pheromone streams, skin particles shed, waste sweated out, no longer needed, body grown, restart... ...motion flows even in ambience.
