At The Cross in the Road

Welcome back to this familiar place.
The life of a drifter can't be vague.
From city to city, and state to state.
A drifter will bounce at any random date.
Trapped in a corner, defense extends.
Stuck where I am, no choice but to defend.
The choices will circle around my brain.
Here, there, when's my next train?
Back to the wasteland of rain and smoke?
Everything left there is a hoax.
No friends, no family, no one who cares.
The one's who do will die before seeing me there.
Back to hell and all it's fiery dreams?
I can't go back if I wish to stay clean.
Stay here in the tundra and freeze to death?
Without my partner in crime; forget the rest.
Small town livin' with city light wishes.
I see them as no more than domesticated fishes.
Swimming in a bowl for the rest of time.
Keep me here alone this place will be mine.
Travel up north and count on a friend?
Last I checked they're always pretend.
There for you until you need them to.
All of a sudden it becomes, "Who are you?"
To go back home to my origin.
Go back to where it all begins.
Go home to everything I know and love.
Go back to who I swore I was.
City streets and Broadway gleamin'.
Maybe it's just my own distorted 'Big City Dreamin'.
Not even certain the option is open.
I'm pretty sure I closed that bridge and burned it.
Torched that path until it reached sky high.
Complications of a drifter....try.
