Can't Promise
I can't promise you that I won't hurt you
But I can assure you I won't do it with intention
And I can't promise that things will always be easy
But I'll do my best to comfort you when they get hard
I can't say that I'll have all the answers to things you question
But I'm willing to give you clarity on anything that troubles your mind
And I can't tell you that I'll never get anything wrong
But I'm open to learning and working on how to make it right
There are things I know that I may never be good at
But I'll always try to rise above enough when and where it really counts
And for each time my weaknesses prevent me from running to your aid
I'll find the strength to go beyond in places you wouldn't expect
I'm not really sure that any of my offerings could ever stand out
But I'm really captivated by the thought of showing you that you're outstanding
And I don't really know if you're looking for a place to run to
But I hope you know my arms are open should it be something you seek
If the winter cold ever becomes too much for you to handle
There's a chance the warmth I have might be sufficient for your needs
Though I don't have the cure to put your worries to rest
I'll continue to be here for you to unload them all
For those times you lose your way and can't see beyond fog-ridden skies
I'll help guide you down the path you want to find yourself on
I have no desire to let you fall to the ground
But I'm definitely filled with the urge to catch and lift you high
In fact I like the idea of holding you tight
Much more than I like the idea of trying to let you go
And for each time you're prevented from falling asleep at night
I'd like to wrap you up tenderly in blankets of peace and safety
Though it's easy for some to use words to make beautiful promises
I'd rather my actions attempt to sweeten the bitter reality of no guaranties
A promise is just a token of hope based on idealistic principles
We have no clue what we can stick to when events are out of our control
And I realize things can get complicated and that we only know what we think
But I'd like to work at the simplicity of conveying how I feel
No I'm not confident that I can promise you perfection
But I do believe that I can show you real
But I can assure you I won't do it with intention
And I can't promise that things will always be easy
But I'll do my best to comfort you when they get hard
I can't say that I'll have all the answers to things you question
