I Believe

Dylan told us about "painting his masterpiece"
but my works don't have to be so grand
I delight in little achievements
guiding people to roads less violent
and glazed in love
the irate citizen who wants kill all politicians
a Fox News believer who thinks the president is a fraud
and the four year old who has been told to fight
ingrained in my world view is a belief that the experiment called the United States
can work and thrive when the people are grounded
in tolerance
respectful but not slavish to the rule of law
and confident in the peaceful resolution of disputes
My country has done some horrific things all over the planet in my name
but that can't wipe out an ideal within my personal domain
that "nothing comes from violence and nothing ever could"
but I can honestly say that since that day on the playground
in junior high when competition got the best of me
my efforts have consistently avoided striking a fellow human
inanimate objects occasionally haven't been as lucky
now my masterpiece will not be gigantic and eye grabbing
but the internal satisfaction will be beyond measure...

and I say "love is the deepest wave"
