river call me home
(somewhat inspired by ‘Moody River’)
the river’s deep, the mountain’s high
& I ain’t bound for glory
you’ll pine away with a broken heart
if you listen to my story
I had a girl when I was young
she sent my heart a’ flyin’
heaven’s light shined in her eyes
I loved her without tryin’
we vowed to live a fairy tale
to learn of love’s sweet charms
& when our joyful days were done
we’d die in each other’s arms
then at a dance one fateful night
wicked Luna lured me to the shadows
with trembling lips I tasted her kiss
she caressed me like the gallows
she touched me with her hands of sin
she had my senses flarin’
but somethin’, nameless, made me turn
my girl just stood there, starin’
I chased her as she fled in tears
felt an omen that made me shiver
she sailed the wind as it carried her
to the edge of the mighty river
she cast herself to the water’s rage
she never heard my plea
as the rushing river pulled her away
her arms reached out to me…
now all these long & lonesome years
I’ve lived a coward’s shame
fearin’ the fate that beckons me home
the river chants my name
