The Shame of Human
The poetry mountain in my head
orders me to climb
to stand and be judged
to face our future fearful and alone
This must be the place
where the last tree burned
while greed danced
the few became richer
a jig of starvation for the many
damning the ashes
with bitterness that choked the skies
Whether to celebrate our demise
or simply to forget
I'm tricked by the moment
and cry out for wine
although it's certain the bottle is empty
so I know there will be
no more
I pray for an age of reason
the wisdom of compassion
old-fashioned values
the warmth of a favourite son
but only silence remains
its cradle of vultures
wheeling bold and eager
to tear the truth from God's lies
Do we escape to the stars
correct our mistakes
and then learn from history
to begin again
on a fresh new world
or as human as our shame
Does it all
end
here?
orders me to climb
to stand and be judged
to face our future fearful and alone
This must be the place
where the last tree burned
while greed danced
the few became richer
a jig of starvation for the many
damning the ashes
with bitterness that choked the skies
