Fools' Gold
Forsooth I look on all mankind
God’s breath! Wouldst thou deem me blind?
To see not what ails thee in thy fear
To cast an eye or lend an ear
I trow, behold, the lies and jest
The cursed ones never knowing rest
Who wean their follies on their brothers
Think of themselves and never others
Save it brings them profit vast
Those who fear death’s call at last
Then think it will make perfect sense
To make amends and recompense?
Know thou these fools who seek but gold
Will tremble as the day grows old
Who prostrate themselves at heaven’s gate
Will then be judged too late, too late!
God’s breath! Wouldst thou deem me blind?
To see not what ails thee in thy fear
To cast an eye or lend an ear
I trow, behold, the lies and jest
The cursed ones never knowing rest
Who wean their follies on their brothers
Think of themselves and never others
Save it brings them profit vast
Those who fear death’s call at last
Then think it will make perfect sense
To make amends and recompense?
Know thou these fools who seek but gold
Will tremble as the day grows old
Who prostrate themselves at heaven’s gate
Will then be judged too late, too late!
