BLOODY TOWN FEAST
In a country where the taste of blood is heaven
People love it like bread is to leaven
Blood cooked with guts and liver
Just the sound of it you might quiver
To their traditional hospitality, it’s a given…
Stories of half-bodied flying creatures of the night
Could make some children go to sleep with fright
Mosquitoes compete sucking their blood
After a day of fun playing in the mud
Rice cakes dipped in meat-blood—their afternoon delight!
Just the sight of blood-sucking vampire bats and leeches
Along the tropical rivers and sun-drenched beaches
Could make some uninvited town guests feel queasy
And simultaneous shrieking sounds at dawn, uneasy
Blood splattered all over—in preparation for the feast
I sure did miss the taste of blood
And the freshly grilled rock cod
Would you like to come along in our next town feast
To savor our hospitality and have a taste of the beast—
Delicious pork meat it is, cooked in its own blood!
People love it like bread is to leaven
Blood cooked with guts and liver
Just the sound of it you might quiver
To their traditional hospitality, it’s a given…

Love that pork dish. No one makes it like they do. My fav sinigang and chu kiok. Seriously though I hate leeches, saw a lot in paddy fields growing up. Good read EngrVV.

We call the dish "dinuguan," others simply called it chocolate meat. I used to hate leeches too when I was young because I was bitten many times while swimming in the river, but once I learned their use in saving limbs and lives in the medical field, I changed my views about them.
Thanks for the read Grace and the nice comment.

Thanks for dropping by Jasper, it's been awhile. Yes, you got that right, mostly about pork. Every household in town usually slaughters 1 or 2 pigs on the eve of the town fiesta. Then they use the blood of pigs for cooking with guts and liver. We call the dish "dinuguan" (chocolate meat). It's a favorite appetizer among the coconut wine/hard liquor drinkers.

Sounds like terrorist activity disguised as a pig roast. Gruesome but well written.

Thanks for your misconception of the plot, Poetspeak...you just made me achieve my goal. I find it amusing and gratifying to have my fellow poets interpret my work in a different perspective based on their state of mind at the moment.

I find the comments most amusing
with the exception of Grace's
who knows what it's all about
I am a vampire too

Yes, the comments are quite amusing absinthe...We all knew too well because we are just neighboring islands! Thanks for the read and interesting comment kabayan. (Hope you don't mind if I borrowed your form/technique [Tag-lish] in one of my poems submitted in the comp.)

I have never met a foreigner who could actually eat that bloody stew, not even the Germans who have bloodsausages!
Ahaha, yes, I 'invented' that form of 'par lore' poems because my friends say that I can write poems in English but not in Tagalog. Well, they are wrong! ;)

I find that 'par lore' form of yours very creative. How about trying my acrostic-tanka?

Your timing is perfect seeing as we are getting closer to Halloween. I think sometimes we overlook the fact that anytime we eat meat we are killing another living being. Going to be some blood involved.

re: Re: BLOODY TOWN FEAST
I guess you could say that, although that was not in my mind. This was created for a comp. that requires using "the taste of blood" in any of the lines. Somehow there will be always blood, sweat and tears involved in our lives in one way or another.
Thanks for the read bro. JazzMan, as always!

feast+blood= look like two dramatic words with the obvious conclusion to me!

Wow, thanks for the bloody treat Engineer. I miss eating "Dinuguan". Sadly, I work abroad where pork is prohibited based on their culture and religion.
