Komodo

I am cold now.

But it's better
than before
when I needed you
to hold me.

Evolution takes care
of her own
in her own
special way
does she not?

So
from starved puppy
I grew:

Hair dropped off in chunks
(you didn't notice at the time)
while skin turned a scaly green
clawed fingers
to cling to everything
replaced the playful paws.
I began to bask in sun
for warmth
instead of emitting;
eager eyes hardened, shrunk
to search for sustenance
elsewhere.

About then
is when my tongue
split
and I no longer cared
for love.

I've had my fill
of worms today

and I feel a chill.

I'm off to lie out.
