night terrors

Awakened when the dog started barking
Awake and cannot move
Paralyzed and fully conscious
By unseen weight on top of you

Something large begins to stomp
Stomping down the hall
Your bedroom door is beat to hell
And beatings on the wall

Shadows in the corner
The corner of your room
Animated and moving free
Reaching out to you

They slip and slide their bodies black
Slither on your sheets
From the floor the beatings continue
The dog runs in retreat

Sudden silence and your body moves
You sit up in the dark
You think this whole thing was just a dream
Until the dog begins to bark
