Gravel heart

standing on the roaddside craving love like a dog
tail wagging each time a car goes past
heart banging
hope panting hard

each car drives on
passing a crazy heart

an open hole gets wider
as if to swallow the aching soul

left behind
discarded
an empty bottle of beer

a glimpse of beauty at the window
smiling wide
steering to another place
without my heart inside

howling at the moon
in a crowded room
no one hears the sigh of my desperation for love above the hubub
the traffic rumbles on
the dog forgotten by the edge

ears droop
tail stops wagging
soul hangs heavy towards the dirt

exhaust fumes linger
a fragrance of hope drifts to the darkness of another day gone by
the ghost of a scent of love disappears
