Her Eyes

Her eyes, though wrinkled and weak
have been the tools she has used all her life
to reach out to those she loves,
to care for, to cry for, to say a million things.. even tho not speak.

Her eyes, though tired and old
have closed in prayer for those she holds dear,
for those she has never met,
to bless, to console, to wish for peace and love instead of gold.

Her eyes, though swollen and raw
Have shined brightly with life, and joy, and tears
Gentle and caring when seeing her newborn child,
Hard as steal, cold and stern when laying down the law.

Her eyes, though poor and dim
Have cried with joy, love, pain and fear
Watching her children marry, succeed, and fail…
Remembering back to sunshine days, while at grave of love, of “him”.

Her eyes though calm and quiet
are the mark of where she has been,
the harshnees of this life,  and all the love she has given.
Like a book, her eyes could be read.. if one were just to look.
