How Jesus Turns A Negative Into A Positive
As men grow old, older than 60,
"Shrinkage" sets in.
The reverse of puberty occurs.
A "second childhood" happens.
Since men do all their fathering in their 20s,30s,40s,
Its fitting for a diminution of sexual desire
And performance to befall them in their 60s and 70s.
Men naturally feel depressed about it,
Pining away for the good old days
Of their youth, ie, sexual vigor.
They may become ashamed of what they have become:
Impotent old "has beens."
"I'm not the man I used to be,"
Sums up the attitude I sometimes have.
But Christ said,
"Some men make themselves eunuchs
For the Kingdom of God's sake"(Matthew 19.12).
"Let him who is willing do so."
By inviting us to become eunuchs,
As if it were a good thing,
A step upward on the spiral staircase of maturity,
Jesus enables us to accept
Our elderly condition without shame.
We can turn the "lemon" of impotence into
The "lemonade" of spirituality, mysticism,
Even the religious experience of transcendence.
We can think of ourselves as becoming angelic, ie, nonsexual.
We can experience on this side of the grave
True freedom from the bondage of sex
The way that the deceased do.
For Christ said, "In the Resurrection
They that are worthy of the world to come
are as the angels, neither marrying, [having sex]
Nor are they given in marriage"(Luke 20.35-36).
