MY DEAR OLD MUM

MY DEAR OLD MUM

There’s been many a story told me, from a time before I was born
Where working folk had real hard times, and their clothes were often torn

Lots of washing and cleaning, and doing for other folk
Fetching coal in a scuttle, and giving the fire a poke

Cooking food on fire, in a great big boiling pot
Then pressing creases out of clothes, with the iron that was hot

This lady has been loyal, though her husband has passed on
A lifetime sharing memories, together they were one

An allotment growing food they had, potatoes and rhubarb too
Cabbages and lettuces, and celery you could chew

Their house it has a big back yard, where as a child I played
But when this lady’s husband died, she didn’t move she stayed

I remember being a toddler, I used to drive them mad
My mum was always busy, so I played some games with dad

He taught me lots of special things, like what is good and bad
He showed me by example, and I’m proud of my old dad

I’m grown up and I miss my dad; I know my mum does too
So I help her every bit I can, she’s nearly ninety two

I wake her in the morning, and I help her out of bed
She manages to wash herself, and sort her sleepy head

I open up her dressing gown, she says is this for me
It is I say you are the queen, she asks ‘where is my tea’

You better put your teeth in mum, and put your slippers on
She smiles and says your good to me, I love you my dear son

Just leave me in the bedroom now, just go and boil my eggs
And I will put some clothes on, then I’ll activate my legs

She loves her nice hot cup of tea, then hard boiled eggs and toast
When week-end comes she loves it, when we have a Sunday roast

We often sit with photos, and look at days gone by
Those pictures of my mum and dad, they always make me cry

Their lives were full of happiness, and they always loved the sun
And I have to say with all my heart, I love my dear old mum
