Here's My Case (A case for subjection)
Tastes in music is like so many other items
very all over the place
so lend me your mind for a moment in time
and explore what goes with meter and rhyme
These are guys that I can't get enough of
not perfect for sometimes things go wrong
but something majestic in their voices
so here my top five choices:
The Soul Stirrer himself, Mr. Cooke
much more than a golden voice
"A change Is Gonna Come" so linked to civil rights
seeing humanity is reality's light
how can the feet stay still with "Twistin' the Night Away"?
and that "Cupid' has he gone away?
Say Plant and so know that's the voice of Led Zep
ranges from howling to the urgency of the blues
my full recognition of his appeal
was in finding his solo work to be so real
goes from articulating that "Stairway To Heaven"
to pain of his son's death he never made it to eleven
"All of My Love" is one of Zeppelin's swan songs
and with "I Believe" you can never go wrong
The next guy some friends of mind really dislike
Mr. Hall is blue eyed soul brother who wanted to be a Temp
made a splash with a partner named Oates
can hit the water with so many coats
keyboards, guitar, writer, even a tv show
if "Sara" is smiling I really don't know
does "Everytime You Go Away" with soul inflection so true
Paul Young's version hasn't got a clue
Have Quincy Jones to thank for helping James Ingram
if Jamaal Wilkes was "Silky" on the court, in music James is so
a vocal tonic that always hits the ears so smooth
I dare you to find a song from his mouth that is crude
"One Hundred Ways' was but a warmup for the tour de force
his work on "Secret Garden" all you need for a sensual course
And then there is, the real king, Cole, yes sorry you Elvis lovers
for this man could play piano and write
his version of "Stardust" is my favorite song of all time
push repeat and get a smile for never will I mind
probably the only singer to grace GOP and Democratic conventions
and one of the first blacks in Hancock Park is worth a mention
From the romantic "Sentimental Reasons" to "Route 66"
with Nat you always got your kicks
There you have it and I know they aren't spring chickens
at least in their sixties but the three living still sound good
some young guns on the scene may one day fit the bill
but today if you deemed them legends I have to say that just makes me ill!
