The Last Kiss

It has been ten years since our last kiss:
A seal of forever longing, and yet
The taste echoes upon my lips:
A casserole of love and regret,
For unwavering shadows attached by day
Are loyal partners owed our debt,
They fade beneath the reflecting moon
When wandering thoughts drift where we last met:
A parking lot late in June
Clinging for comfort both given and taken,
An embrace that found the words unsaid,
Hanging on for one last moment
Just so parting would hurt a little more
From a wildfire that for five years had spread
Only to leave the ground scorched
With embers forever smoldering
As our paths wound through woods untread,
Steadily farther from our last kiss:
A strange, illogical backwards twist
That our first and every since
Devoured
As a drowning rat breathes the air,
Yet our last was also our first
Of soft, gentle, loving care:
A moment spent balanced upon a knife,
Mixed with the contrasting stab of despair,
The cut to this day bleeds
As I reluctantly tend to the forest I've grown
Despite having sensed the hollow seeds.
I close my eyes to reminisce,
Amongst the tangle of vines and leaves,
Of a night that changed the stars above:
The night that I made our last kiss.
