Coastal Melaleuca

Wandering the tranquil coastline forest
a secret sanctuary, sheltered by dunes
isolated by freshwater billabongs, I gaze
into enchanting tangled blue reflections

suspended in black tannin backwaters
twisted roots snare limbs and torsos
of lost lovers that carelessly ventured
beyond the safety of the sandy shores

Melaleuca, humble tree of hidden truth
sweet fragrant leaves heal my wounds
paper bark peels from crooked trunks
versatile fabric to her keeper’s customs

from behind the crystal breakers, I float
admiring the morning light on Melaleuca
an emerald crown rising above the dunes
a secret sanctuary, sheltering in shadows.
