Deaf Kids

“If given the chance to become hearing
most deaf people would choose to remain deaf.”

‘Actions speak louder than words’-
Well for some of us it’s what we talk.

My back’s turned-
Don’t want to hear it.

What an original joke
Mouthing words at me,
Wow I forgot I couldn't hear.

Then some people try using
Over the top hand gestures
To make a simple message-
It’s called hearing aids.

Oh so you speak sign language?
Sure do.

Hey I have a cousin whose friend
Lost her hearing once with an ear infection!
So relevant.

But how will your friends talk to you?
…In English…?

It’s great; you just turn off your aids
And you’re deaf to the haters.

Yes, I have a disability.
No, I can’t see it either.

But you can speak fine!
It’s called years of speech therapy
And intensive work as a young child,
Thanks to my hard-working mum.

Oh poor thing, how did it happen?
I was fighting dragons as a baby
And they roared so loud that my head burst.

It’s not hearing loss-
I never had that hearing to lose.

You’re so normal though!

Should I risk giving our kids
My dodgy deaf genes?
