Coal Men

Coal Men
Lessons from the Gullah Isles

The Ol' Man Jess said, as he sipped on his corn liquor,

I know I'm goin' to Hell for the shit I've done
The only thing left for determination is whether

The Devil is gonna give me a big ass shovel with a little pile of coal to work day to day

Or, a teaspoon of a shovel with a mountain of coal to move everyday

Either way I spect I'll be smilin'
Cause right next to me is gonna be
all these reverends and deacons and sisters-of- the church
Who turn their noses up as if God's kingdom is supremely theirs

They'll be cryin'
Which'll have me singin' as I shovel

I need cigarettes son, Camels
Run to the store fo' me
