Image for the poem Septimus

Septimus

The gate springs wide
Step out onto the sand
Look into his eyes
And face another man
Both are armed
To fight to the death
But only one
Will take another breath

Give it your all and hear the thousands scream your name
SEPTIMUS! SEPTIMUS! SEPTIMUS!
Hold your head up high and place your foot upon the slain

Uphold a tradition of a thousand years
Bathed in the glory of a thousand cheers

The blood it runs
It blinds your eyes
Where has he gone?
Or have you died?
No, a sharp pain
Swing your sword
Connect with the flesh
See your enemy on the floor

A slave in life
You were forced to this
Fight til death
But your only wish
To be free
To live your own life
But is not thus
You live by the knife

Eventually
You will lay upon the sand
Entertain
The people of the land
Emperor
He sits up so high
Execute
To their cheers and cries

Uphold a tradition of a thousand years
Drowned in the shame of a thousand jeers

But, no!

Stand and fight
It is all that you know
Place your blade
Upon another throat
In delight
They scream for death and maim
For your glory
They will forever remember your name

Give it your all and hear the thousands scream your name
SEPTIMUS! SEPTIMUS! SEPTIMUS!
Hold your head up and place your foot upon the slain

Uphold a tradition of a thousand years
Bathed in the glory of a thousand cheers
