Patterns of Life

It was hard enough
going through it
the first time,
separated
for two decades,
and then
we managed
to find each other
for the time being,
another two decades.

I'm not sure
where you've gone
this time,
hunched over
your mind games,
a drink
in one hand
and a remote control
in the other,
a flurry
of excuses
and just trying
to chill out
you say.

In the meantime,
I've been right here
waiting again
and it's been most
of my life
waiting
for you
to come across
with being here.

First
you were gone
and now
you are gone.

And it does not seem
to matter,
the sad look
in my eyes,
when you ask me
what's wrong
and after
saying it over
and over
I have finally come
to the place
where I say,
"Nothing…
nothing at all."

That's just
the way
it is.
