The Comet
1.
No one saw the white tail in the sky
ahead far brighter than when it had
been a thin lash like bend to the northwest
now it finally appeared like a comet dripping
a million diamond embers that flared briefly:
it left the sky full of white smoke it passed
over her a weaving shuttlecock and then
descended to the end of its blazing beam.
2.
The next thing she knew she was alone:
a white band that had stretched
across the sky was beginning to fade
it sounded like she heard a faint whispering
calling to her, begging her, but now
it was almost morning: the moon was down
and the stars seemed tired she began to let
the faint whistling lead her into the mountain forests.
