Society & Self Harm

It's funny how society  always associates self harm with cutting. But self harm comes in other forms. Some people don't have the guts to put a blade on their skin. As a result, they resort to biting themselves and sticking objects into their skin.
Biting  nails until they are stubs and even then still chewing off skin until aching fingertips ooze blood. Gnawing and pulling at bruised lips until they are burning pink with cuts and scars. Tasting and sucking the blood from the wounds. Starving themselves so that you can literally  hear their  tummies growling like an untamed monster.  Instead of feeding it, they ignore that little thing so they can experience the delicious gnawing pangs of hunger. Sticking pointed objects into their arms until there is a deep seated indent in the skin.
This is what society has done. Made us feel like we are worthless just because we don't look like the girl/boy in the Maybelline/Abercrombie  commercial. Like we are not enough. Not skinny enough. Not tall enough. Not smart enough. Not pretty enough. Just not ENOUGH.  People joke about eating disorders and self harm like its nothing. STOP. It's not funny and it really hurts. Others see suicide as a cowardly escape from life.  Some people have tried love and have been broken more times than they care to remember. That is why we mutilate ourselves. So that the pain on the outside overpowers the ache and emptiness on the inside. We are so focused on hurting our bodies that we forget everything else in that moment of sweet agony. We self harm  even when all we want to do is hurt the person who caused the pain. We blame ourselves as we  slide the blade along our skin. Sometimes it scares us what we can do to ourselves. We have brought a whole new meaning to the phrase: "Love hurts".
