The Knock
There's a knock at my door to save my soul
and I know who it is, not this face but this type
and I know she means well and it's that night
when it's door to door canvassing to bring
out the souls for Jesus, Sweet Jesus.
And I ask her on in and her accomplice
and we sit in the living room nodding
for what can you do for those who feel
it's their mission in life to go door-to-door
and rattle on about their particular truth?
And the evening advances and we come to the place
where they ask me again if I wouldn't like to make
that...

The Value of Living
An interesting drug, money,
how it puts off thinking
about how the worries of life,
eats away that the time that we have
and the making of it allows
us to think about all of the rewards
we will give to ourselves
for being so clever,
and yet there is the ultimate
or the eventual,
or maybe only simply the ideal,
the perfected thought
that never having to worry about anything
is never going to happen
no matter how much money we have,
but then at least it can be more comfortable
to die while the jackals fight over your estate...

At the Hospital
After 24 hours
of hard core pain,
I finally got
the medicine
I needed,
but no matter
how stoned
they get me,
sending me in
for a CT scan
still did not
convince me
to take
medical advice
from a cat.

Lock and Key
Sweet pain
and reticent motion,
falling
in love
and holding back
for fear
of pain,
the push
and pull
of listening
and wanting
to hear,
of holding on
to every syllable
and yet rejecting
the thought
of any rejection.
How do you
ride a machine
and not know
how it moves
and take its curves
as a source
of your own motion?
The playful dissection
of knowing
every step
and not understanding
the foot
that takes it.
How to kiss, ...

The Last Mystery
Who will be the next
to line up
on the wire
to straddle the fence
and mimic the great comics?
All the mummers
dance and wave,
perhaps taking dictation
and passing critical judgment
on the need
for closer inspection
and then, the moment
of despair,
the sweepers come
and wield the night
and plaster dust
is filtered finely
into bins
and charged
with circumlocuitous light.
And you.
Finely done!
Ah! And a daisy!
An abab…..repeated!
Splatter walked corpses ...

A Word Game
I want to know
if you'd really to play
I've got a word game
it's just word game
I say something
then you write
a word right back
it's just word game
a game with words
but every time we turn round
we take another step
and step on down
it's just a word game
there's not a bottom
that you finally get to
it's just a word game
it's just a game
to play with you
send it on back
and I'll talk to you
step on down
it's word game
it's just game
I'll start us off
and you can play
from there
and...

A New Mythology
In a world
of isometrics
give and take
and "spread-upon-its,"
not one loss would
fill the sonnets,
each haiku
its weight in phonics,
an iconographic sea
of symbols,
all revealed
in fields of thimbles;
this is how I'd walk.
And to explain
this madder vision,
each channel spied
and made decision
would be color-coded,
and this how it goes:
Orange is the body's world,
the universe at large:
the physical,
the mandible,
the hand
on tree or barge.
Purple is the mental...

Zen Zero with the Rim Knocked Off
The big tall bully
walks
into the room,
and everyone turns
and looks;
they know where he is
at all times,
and if he reaches
to flick his hair,
everyone is aware
of his every move
and the crowd scatters
like a school of grackles
unaffected
by his inability
to keep
from telegraphing
his every move,
and so
he becomes harmless
and disinfectious
with his noise.
Drinking something
and subtly playing
a game
of 9 ball
by himself,
the small framed
swordsman ...

The Enemy of My Enemy Always Was: A Dogma
The teacher
notes
that some
spiritual
materialism
founded
in the bewildered
dustings
of some lost cause
bounces like a wounded bird
upon the ground
of our illusions.

Some properties
of the mind
are quantum
psychology's answer
to these outrageous
effects
within the field
of operational
function;
a priori points
of consciousness
extended
as inductive
pathways
of significance
become
indistinguishable
between good guesses
and genetic
predispositions:
Maybe we were born
this way.
Fractal examinations
of material composition
may reveal
that elemental structure
and self-awareness
are inevitable partners.
