POEMS AND SHORT STORIES
Poet Introduction
Poet, nature lover and artist. I mainly write in rhyme.
He Kissed Me
An old memory from long ago
one that never leaves my mind
that night he kissed me
on the lips
my boss, age thirty-nine.
I was just sixteen
over twice my age he’d been
it caught me by surprise
these lustful feelings
I’d seen in other men.
I ran away
needing to find a place to hide
but he gave chase, not so far behind
stopping, I suddenly turned
I had to overcome my fears
a lesson in life that I had not yet learned.
He stopped several feet away
wordless, we both stared
then I heard...
one that never leaves my mind
that night he kissed me
on the lips
my boss, age thirty-nine.
I was just sixteen
over twice my age he’d been
it caught me by surprise
these lustful feelings
I’d seen in other men.
I ran away

but he gave chase, not so far behind

I had to overcome my fears
a lesson in life that I had not yet learned.
He stopped several feet away
wordless, we both stared
then I heard...

Red
A vintage beauty
with fashion and flair,
long and flaming,
wild ginger red hair.
Cool to the touch
in her retro Lennon shades
she walks like a supermodel
her hips slightly swag.
Wearing body-hugging pants
of avocado green
reminiscent of the 60s
it is quite the scene.
Dancing to the music
in her own living room
snapping her fingers
and singing to the tune.

Undecided
I woke up this morning
to fluffy white snow
covering the ground.
Half of me thought,
oh yuck, please not now!
But the other half thought,
oh, so pretty, beautiful in all the trees.
But then my opposite half thought,
oh no, snow up to my knees!
But then the other half decided,
it would be so nice for Christmas eve.

He
Quiet he has now become
after talking for a bloody week straight
brooding in the stillness
silent as darkness never speaks
words left to the speechless
an apology never heard
how quiet he has become
I hear only the faint chirping of a bird.

Aunt Freda’s Chili
Aunt Freda's Chili is oh so good!
She probably makes it more often than she should.
As it won't be long before our stomachs start to rumble,
we’ll all be running for the bathroom, hopefully not to stumble.
The gas is building unbelievably fast!
Oh my, did I just see a cousin running past?
Don’t tell me somebody fed it to the little dog too.
I hope no one steps in that it’s hard to get off your shoe.
Aunt Freda’s chili is mighty tasty, yes indeed.
It’s time to go back for more and enjoy the chili feed!

Poem in the Night
A poem lost
within the night
from my mind
too sleepy to write.
I'll remember it
by morning
but
I never do.
Lost for good
among the
pillows
and my dreams.
Yet another poem
will come
as they always do
But will I write it down?
within the night
from my mind
too sleepy to write.
I'll remember it
by morning
but
I never do.
Lost for good
among the
pillows
and my dreams.
Yet another poem
will come
as they always do
But will I write it down?

Harmonica
The sound of a harmonica
is music to my ears
but the day I heard my neighbor play
well, that brought my eyes to tears.
He played so extremely well
I wanted to hear more
then he added drums
wow, a one-man band, encore!
It caught my husband and I by surprise
somebody we’ve both known for years
a carpenter by lifelong trade
now a musician so well played.
A neighbor with such a wonderful talent
something we never knew
playing the harmonica so beautifully
on a Saturday afternoon.

No Spiders Allowed
I’ve told you all before
to stay outside the house
that is where you all belong
along with every mouse.
Not inside my house
it’s off limits don’t you see
so stay away from my front door
or danger there will be.
Don't try hiding in a corner
or in a bath towel on the door
don't let me find you in my kitchen
or on the bathroom floor.
Stay outside where you belong
or in the fire you’ll go
or flushed on down the toilet
with the dirty water below.

First Cooking Lesson
The day before my wedding forty years ago
my mother taught me how to cook one meal
fried chicken
mash potatoes
homemade bread
and fudge
all cooked on an old woodstove.
After I got married
I decided electric was the way to go.

Please Whisper
Not everyone wakes up
this early in the morning
so please whisper for awhile
until it stops the snoring.
Please be quiet if you can
you’re all being way too loud
lower your noisy voices
don’t make another sound!
Just keep it down a little longer
don't clink the coffee pot
please close the door quietly
before you wake it up!
You’re starting to drive me crazy
oh dang, I hear it getting out of bed
now you’ve really done it
you should have listened to what I said.

Willow
A woman made of tree roots and wire
absent of life within her mind
no willow in her rooted skirt
she tips a glass unfilled with dark red wine
while feeding her imaginary flowers
so beautifully divine
from a woven watering can
flowing with invisible watery dreams
her heart without any deep desires
a cat of concrete by her side
non-living amongst the cedar trees
at the top of a snow-covered mountain
that kisses a bright blue sky.

Queen
I am the Queen of this house,
and don't you forget that by the way.
If not for me who would do the cooking
yes, this is my kitchen, so please stay out I say.
Unless you plan to help by chopping up the chicken,
you know how much I dislike cutting up fresh meat,
so I'll leave that part to you, I'll even let you sweep.
Who would wash the dirty dishes, dry, and put them all away?
Stack the wood out on the front porch,
well, I know I don't do that every day.
Oh, please don't laugh that way!
Who would wash your dirty socks,
your stinky...
and don't you forget that by the way.
