POEMS AND SHORT STORIES
Poet Introduction
Wait . . . Poetry? I thought this was a dating site!
Who is to say
Who is to say
What talent is
Or love
Or honor
Who can comfort
Unshed tears
And broken hearts
Who can take us by the hand
As children
And lead us to warmth and happiness
What love can break and mend hearts
At the same time
What wish satisfies the wisher
What words express the
habits of the heart
The intentions of the mind
What talent is
Or love
Or honor
Who can comfort
Unshed tears
And broken hearts
Who can take us by the hand
As children
And lead us to warmth and happiness
What love can break and mend hearts
At the same time
What wish satisfies the wisher
What words express the
habits of the heart
The intentions of the mind

Failing
With what words
Lingering unspoken, unremembered
Which would ring tinny in my ears
Could I describe the joys and sorrows
And how much of each
Blending and diminished with years
I loved once, or more than once,
Or many times through my days
When heartbeats firmly called out to lovers.
Answers sighing on the wind.
Through sunrises and sunsets
Hands held and whispered breaths
I once was strong, unyielding
Confident in myself
Now, back bent I shuffle
Softly spoken, but not asking for help
Lingering unspoken, unremembered
Which would ring tinny in my ears
Could I describe the joys and sorrows
And how much of each
Blending and diminished with years
I loved once, or more than once,
Or many times through my days
When heartbeats firmly called out to lovers.
Answers sighing on the wind.
Through sunrises and sunsets
Hands held and whispered breaths
I once was strong, unyielding
Confident in myself
Now, back bent I shuffle
Softly spoken, but not asking for help

I kissed a girl
I kissed a girl and I liked it
Her lips didn’t taste like anything
And I may have been stoned
In itself unusual
My hand felt the supple strength
As it caressed her back
My other on her neck and cheek
Cupped under her ear
It was great just to hold her
It was wonderful
I kissed a girl
When I was drunk and high
I don’t remember much of that night
But I remember a kiss
And I want it again
Her lips didn’t taste like anything
And I may have been stoned
In itself unusual
My hand felt the supple strength
As it caressed her back
My other on her neck and cheek
Cupped under her ear
It was great just to hold her
It was wonderful
I kissed a girl
When I was drunk and high
I don’t remember much of that night
But I remember a kiss
And I want it again

Who falls in love?
I'm a stupid kid
Who falls in love
With people I know I oughtn't
I was put on notice
On guard
I was so sure it wouldn't happen
But it did
And probably too quickly
But my heart is young and free
Young, free, and foolish
Just like me
Who falls in love
With people I know I oughtn't
I was put on notice
On guard
I was so sure it wouldn't happen
But it did
And probably too quickly
But my heart is young and free
Young, free, and foolish
Just like me

Goodbye
I heard it
Lingering behind the words
Maybe you weren't even aware of it
But goodbye has been there for a while
And I pretended I didn't hear it
I knew you would leave but not yet
Not now
Maybe I was hearing things
And then I wasn't
You were saying goodbye
With all of the goodbye trappings and fixings
With all of the gentle letdown available
The self-blame
The great things I could and should do
They were all goodbye
You said they weren't
But I'm an expert in goodbye.
I know what I heard.
Lingering behind the words
Maybe you weren't even aware of it
But goodbye has been there for a while
And I pretended I didn't hear it
I knew you would leave but not yet
Not now
Maybe I was hearing things
And then I wasn't
You were saying goodbye
With all of the goodbye trappings and fixings
With all of the gentle letdown available
The self-blame
The great things I could and should do
They were all goodbye
You said they weren't
But I'm an expert in goodbye.
I know what I heard.

Falling with you
I remember
When we fell off your bed, together
Peculiarly entwined.
I tried to catch you
Then we laughed at the hilarity of it all
And I kissed you on your carpet.
I worried about giving you rug burns
On your back
But you insisted
And I never resisted
Not that I would.
What a wonderful night
I remember
When we fell off your bed, together
Peculiarly entwined.
I tried to catch you
Then we laughed at the hilarity of it all
And I kissed you on your carpet.
I worried about giving you rug burns
On your back
But you insisted
And I never resisted
Not that I would.
What a wonderful night
I remember

High dive
I should have kissed her
But I was crippled by self doubt
Like a kid standing on top of the high dive
Hesitating to go in
Even knowing it won't hurt
Hesitating
And when the kid finally does
It was wonderful
Nothing to worry about
But I just stood there
At the top of the diving board
Not kissing her
But I was crippled by self doubt
Like a kid standing on top of the high dive
Hesitating to go in
Even knowing it won't hurt
Hesitating
And when the kid finally does
It was wonderful
Nothing to worry about
But I just stood there
At the top of the diving board
Not kissing her

When you leave
In the morning
as you are wrapped
Around me
Holding on like I was the prize
As if I were the special one
I can't stop myself
From looking forward
And I see the day
When you will leave
When I am destroyed
And must be rebuilt again
So I stay here
Now
And try to push that day away
as you are wrapped
Around me
Holding on like I was the prize
As if I were the special one
I can't stop myself
From looking forward
And I see the day
When you will leave
When I am destroyed
And must be rebuilt again
So I stay here
Now
And try to push that day away

Having fun with women
I have ever been
A lover of women
And I am sure some
Have loved me
In my heart
A burning fire
For a woman to love
And be loved by me
Through cold shoulders
And distant flames
And occasional evenings
With girls, apparently, without names
I have haunted parties
And hunted conversations
Looking for the
One to end my isolation
And never finding
Wandered further along
Hoping to end my
Wandering 'ere long
Now I'm fervently praying
I've reached my destination.
For...
A lover of women

Real Men
Don't cry
That's what I had heard
But that's not quite how it works
Real men cry
In the car
On the way home from the hospital
After they turned off the machines
That eased the breathing
And kept the heart beating
If love
Is watching someone die,
Real men do it stoicly
Without a single tear.
Real men express emotions
When no one is around.
That's what I had heard
But that's not quite how it works
Real men cry
In the car
On the way home from the hospital
After they turned off the machines
That eased the breathing
And kept the heart beating
If love
Is watching someone die,
Real men do it stoicly
Without a single tear.
Real men express emotions
When no one is around.

Something new
So
We went to a bar
And we talked
For six hours
And two days later
We talked again
Eleven hours
Now I'm hoping to see you
tomorrow
or the next day
Every conversation; ecstasy.
Every time I see you,
Thrills through my veins.
New and alluring,
A raging fire.
A whispered hope.
We went to a bar
And we talked
For six hours
And two days later
We talked again
Eleven hours
Now I'm hoping to see you
tomorrow
or the next day
Every conversation; ecstasy.
Every time I see you,
Thrills through my veins.
New and alluring,
A raging fire.
A whispered hope.

There's always you
Like a song from Elliot Smith,
Everything reminds me of you.
All of the little things I want to tell you
All the interesting ideas
All the jokes and videos
I think you'd like.
Then at the party after the dogs
Got into a fight
And there was blood on the floor
And Rich brought that girl
That vacant, vapid girl
Even she made me think of you
You, who are so unlike her
You, who my friends would never disdain
You, who I should have been proud
To have talk to my friends.
Everything reminds me of you.
All of the little things I want to tell you
All the interesting ideas
All the jokes and videos
I think you'd like.
Then at the party after the dogs
Got into a fight
And there was blood on the floor
And Rich brought that girl
That vacant, vapid girl
Even she made me think of you
You, who are so unlike her
You, who my friends would never disdain
You, who I should have been proud
To have talk to my friends.
