POEMS AND SHORT STORIES
Poet Introduction
I'm just a human living my life, and this is where I spill the stuff I can't say out loud. Sometimes the words arrange themselves nicely, and that's pretty cool.
High School Rondo
(a Hepcat61 & brokentitanium collaboration)
How longing has kept me to this
Having seen you, angel in pink smoke
And now in my arms, pressing
I feel you in every inch against me
I felt your eyes but didn’t dare hope
penetrating to the shaded desires
Beneath my carefully-crafted indifference
Disarming, your warm hand took mine
We are as raw and awkward
So new is this thing
But as you move, I move
Our rhythm moving through
The rhythm blurs my logic ...
How longing has kept me to this

Sunsoaked
Tag-along girls on a man’s day of leisure
Never seemed strange at the time
We relished the freedom of a day in the sun
Running, long grass whipping our legs
and mud in our toes
Your Dad’s airplanes whizzing above in the clear air
competing with the sound of cicadas
The river was wide and ours to explore
In retrospect I think
your Mom must have enjoyed the quiet we left her with
The opportunity to brace herself
for all the frogs we would bring home

A blast from my past
I wrote this poem in about 1987 for a school assignment. It isn't spectacular, but I had been writing poetry for a little while at that point and was pretty happy with this one. Somehow, it got shared with someone who (in hindsight) was a complete asshole on that particular day. My poem and I were ridiculed and I took it to heart. It has taken me almost 30 years to get over it and start sharing my writings again - at least with all you kind, anonymous people here at DU. Isn't it crazy, how sensitive we can be?? I'm glad to say I think my skin is thicker now, so I promise I won't be...

Your smile makes me reckless
Your smile makes me reckless
I’m invincible and free
I’d hurl myself off cliffs of lunacy
just to make you smile at me.
Your eyes give me confidence
I’m limitless and strong
Wild with passion to light up those eyes
and hear you praise me with your song.
Your presence makes me powerful
I’m unashamed and brave
Awakening dauntless to the hope
I could wreck myself and still be saved.
Your care makes me careless
I’m dangerous and wild
Reckless, I'd smash my brittle heart
Just for a chance to...

winter wear
ever-proud evergreens droop
heavy with burdens of snow on their shoulders
flat winter light illuminates
without revelation
muting meaningful contrasts
deep under branches where darkness usually reigns
a deceptive face of white blankets the mystery of dank rot beneath
as a smile conceals misery

Vexed
3 a.m. again
Must we always meet like this?
Restless legs and mind
Peace eludes me still
Sleep, goddammit! Go to sleep!
Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck!
Out of my cocoon
Pen in hand I seek to purge
Silence all the noise
Vague ideas float
Words refuse to fall in line
Fucking stubborn muse
Why delude myself?
No one wants to read this shit
Just a wannabe
Moon on untouched snow
All the world seems comforted
I alone am not
Must we always meet like this?
Restless legs and mind
Peace eludes me still

The Year of the Record-Breaking Storm
Crashed into our lives like a wrecking ball
Acute awareness of mortality
Nights of terror...surgeries...pain
Chemo for him, depression for me
Everyone praying - all better, for now
Re-emerge, reset...this year we start free.

Man of Steel
Oh, how I want to break you
Smack your stoic psyche around a bit
As I navigate the depths of your labyrinth
Scratching my nails right through the veneer of your strength
Dismantling the tyranny of duty
Oh, how I want you to break me
To rip open my stubborn heart
Unravel my tapestries of deception
Bite hard into the flesh of my vulnerability
Come on, I can take it
Oh, how I long to bang my soul against yours
And when my core of flint
strikes your core of steel
the sparks would ignite a glorious brilliant flash of...

Lost in thought on a gray day
breathing the silence
list thrown away
Words at play
tumbling from deep corners
begging to be tamed
What could I say but "okay"
and
Sorry for what's left undone

I can't believe I wrote a poem about my minivan - how embarrassing
Back and forth
Here and there
My butt has worn a groove
Seat fits like a glove
Spare hats, granola bars, Kleenex and cash
This van could be my home
Between runs, the only time alone
Process pain with foot to the floor
Angry music propels me
Wailing in the privacy of my speeding fishbowl
Don’t cut me off, arsehole, I’m too close to the edge
This van could be my weapon
More back and forth
Weary and worn
Endless, endless miles
Burning the earth as I sit in a trance
Blinking heavy, stay on course... ...

S.O.S. (an ungrateful rant)
We knew it would be a tough year. Responsibilities piling up, never done, never enough. Always inadequate, but wearing “busy” like a pro, ‘cause that’s how we roll. Don’t worry, world, I got this…..
….burnout. (Can one die from a thousand little paper cuts and hangnails?) Every day like molasses, too much, too much, just keep swimming….
…..we’ll get there soon. Keep your chin up, above water. We knew this wouldn’t be easy. There is light at the end of the tunnel….
…keep swimming (look away from the abyss)….
…Bam! Kick us when we’re down. Well,...

Just walk away
Significance oozes from pressed silent moments
Occasional shining drops amid torrential clouds of trivial chatter
Sensed but not displayed
Careful casualness masking the narrative beneath
Until glances and hearts unite with a jolt of recognition
Genuine connection
disastrous in this life
remains ungratified
