POEMS AND SHORT STORIES
Poet Introduction
irrepressible joie de vivre
after summer rain
Two pennies
Diametrically laid
Sat in perpendicular fashion
On the fresh-dry-rained-on-the-night-prior
Clean concrete sidewalk
The warmth of the sunshine, the intense heat that comes
With the Kentucky summer
Abated and beaten back, restrained,
By the rainfall that breaks our water-fast
Every two weeks
The air is wet yet dry
So is the trees,
They want to drip rainwater but
They’re wrung dry
The puddles have just drained themselves minutes ago
And the welcome mat, now barely damp
My favorite weather

On the fresh-dry-rained-on-the-night-prior
Clean concrete sidewalk
The warmth of the sunshine, the intense heat that comes
With the Kentucky summer
Abated and beaten back, restrained,

The water was murky brown,
You instilled a sense of
Amphibious need
A chicken heart
Paralyzed and sold
And your skin was matte
Kissing you was a little strange
I remembered wrong
It was dark and we were cold
Snaking around each other
My excess became a chemical bond
And I love you lots
And I love you more
And I love you
You instilled a sense of
Amphibious need
A chicken heart
Paralyzed and sold
And your skin was matte
Kissing you was a little strange
I remembered wrong
It was dark and we were cold
Snaking around each other
My excess became a chemical bond

Highway dust
So so so hot out
Fresh iced tea with lemon
Ask the server politely if I can substitute the side salad for the bisque
Flip through my phone
Pacing in a large circle with my fingers
Like some odd carousel
The waiter refills my tea
I sample the images that come through the window
As the train clatters
I wait in the waiting room
Sweat forms
I dream of eating another man's arm
Broiled,
I feel very scared and strange ...

86 degrees and sunny
wind gusts of 30mph
tornado watch and storms possible after 3pm
no rain falls today, which is nice
and the wind is loud, loud in my ears
I race along the road, 2 horsepower beneath me
my tiny chariot of the sun
racing the clouds’ shadows as they pull away
farther and farther forward
just out of range
and I feel the sweet perfume of the apple blossoms across my face,
and gravity leaches into me
as I lean into a turn
it is delicate,
the gyroscope on the string
I am not slowing down

Mink in red, red, dawn
Sleeping, dead, fawn
In mind, in vitro, in time, in motion,
Fern curls hillside shadowbound
Beehive serenade en-rounde
I love the mist; its low temperature
I enter from here
Atop the woods
A path of clay recording my foot
Sunk in, the evergreen,
Standstill among a barren forest of trees
The white petals, small flowers, they kiss the air
I dawdle and hear a gunshot
I know a spirit has just been released
I rest on the moss
I leave a coin behind as a gift
But it reappears in my pocket...

Dark quiet
New springtime pulls us out from winter
The ticking assuages my right ear
shelf
The tiny clock perched upon the tiny
Halters and falters and frowns, as if unsure it’s got the right time
But, it goes on anyways, but always seems to
hold its breath

In deep time
I clasp the fins together and
Move through the water
Liquid, fluid, cool to the touch,
You exhale
You look at me and
Turn away
And slip into the reef
Under the water’s surface
Hear yourself decide
An artificial heartbeat
With intentions coincide

the ten commandments
Milling, in the millinery,
Sweet as a samsara smile
Oil, in the refinery,
Drink in the beguile
Quasi-modal shapeshifting panache
Crossed state lines car crash whiplash
Filtered and flay-ered and sifted and savored
The sun-shine tastes hot and sweet
When in Rome the gulls shuck hulls
And dull the bulls
And the light catches fast on the leaf
If the smoke obscures the line of sight
Pull back the shade and deliver a rite
Protrude the prude in the interlude
And render the road at night
If caught...

Among fair faces lit lightly in dusk
Small flitting figures feel out the dust
Swarm, feather, brethren in
The summer weather
Patterned and painted, mimicry evaluation
Collection of tungsten, heated filament
Like rose petals, furl around
The swathed lamppost, haloed ground
A dance, frenzied, seeking the sun
Circadian rhythm finds its love
Embellished, fleeting, heat-hot quick-touch
In reverent shade, quick tempered sly hush,
A grin, a smile, a collection, a wreath
Insect wings peeled to reveal beneath
The letter of a starry...

I never seem to rile you in the right direction
Everything always feels wrong when we disconnect
And I hate it
Even though the angel on my shoulder sighs
And the demon smiles
I feel no satisfaction
You see me as a blade
And yes, I’m sharp sometimes,
But I am not the knife
And if I move toward you
I am not a threat
I am a kite
Attached to you by string
Flit left to right
In your wind
I can’t help but to hold on
Don’t cut the thread,
It saddens me when you do
Please let me be close ...

I was driving on the highway today
It was colder than it had been in weeks
I noticed the gray grime on the wheels of other cars
The marked, smoky ash that streaked across the white bodice of the truck
The gray winter finally set itself home
On the second of January.

Houses
a house is meant to be loved,
to be moved-into, to be lived in...
to love in, and to die in,
to be buried in the backyard under a lemon tree,
with a simple grave
and it is not a grisly thing,
the youngsters point and laugh
'grampa's in the leaves now!'
a house covers and creaks
shakes in a wind
and in a storm, leaks
a house smiles and sighs
certain smells swirl in certain segments,
you open that cabinet door and breathe in the air from the last...
