Insanity?
My friend Tanya's a personal trainer.
I'm not really sure who's the saner—
she runs right to the limit
(marathon! I just swim it!).
The answer to that's a no-brainer!
"It's just down the road!"

It seemed like an inauspicious evening—
I had no idea what was to come;
that I would make a friend for life,
that you would become part of the family
and that very soon,
we couldn't imagine life without you.
None of us knew how much we needed you.
Nobody was planning to love each other,
but it happened anyway.

The Merry Month of May
Pinch, punch, first of the month,
and no returns, they said.
However, I'd got my second wind
and gave them the third degree.
May the fourth be with them and protect them
from the revenge of the fifth.
At sixes and sevens,
while one over the eighth,
they went down like ninepins.
I wouldn't touch them with a ten-foot pole,
although this one goes up to eleven!
All in the merry month of May.
and no returns, they said.

Talent
It's not what you have,
but your willingness to try;
to work and to give.
It's an unpopular opinion,
but I would go as far as to say that
most 'talent' consists of
interest + opportunity + application.
We all have much to offer.
You matter.

Life's too short
"Life's too short!" I've always heard,
and I used to silently scoff, thinking,
'but it's the longest thing I'll ever do!"
Then, middle age hit
and suddenly I feel great urgency.
As my contemporaries mellow,
I find myself becoming more impatient.
I've been fortunate enough
to have the family and the career,
but I want to do EVERYTHING.
There's a long list of books to read,
things to write,
places to explore,
qualifications to earn,
fundraisers to work on
and much more besides.

I long for understanding
of that which I cannot see.
Will time reveal the whole picture,
of which I only see a small piece?
I pushed upon the door,
hopeful that the reason the last one didn't open
is because this one was supposed to.
It opened a crack,
giving me a glimpse of what lay ahead;
only to slam shut again.
I choose to trust in the future unknown—
even when I do not understand.

Contradiction
How is it possible
to have such a fragile exterior—
being excessively sensitive
to one's environment and words unsaid;
and exactly the same at your very core,
taking everything so hard and intensely
while simultaneously
being made of something so steely
that [after the schism] life's trials
can never break you again—
instead, bending you quite a bit.
It's a mystery to me.

Sea Glass
Just like peering into
an irregular shard of sea glass,
its edges worn smooth by the ocean,
that which we see of our lives right now
is but a partial reflection, and poor.
We catch fleeting glimpses
but do not see the full picture
or know the end of our story—
just as we do not know
the story of the sea glass;
from where it came, or to where it goes.
We are short-sighted at best;
can only guess at the future
and make decisions based upon
the here and now.
Still, there is beauty in the moment
if we...

Today, I drew a lemon in the dirt
Today, I drew a lemon in the dirt
on a stranger's van.
It was parked just across the road
and somebody had already scrawled,
'Chris is a lemon', amongst other things
into the grime.
I etched a lemon into the dirt,
then gave it a pair of stick-on googly eyes.
I bought myself a plastic fairy wand,
complete with flashing lights
and then, for a dare,
attached my bank card
and paid for my shopping with it.
Going one step further,
I tied it to my key card for work
and spent all day opening doors with it,

Floodgates
Stay away from the floodgates—
they are there to keep water in
and people out.
It's tempting to make an exception,
but even a tiny gap will cause a leak;
over time, creating a flood
before the pressure builds
and everything comes tumbling

Lonely as it is on this side,
the water needs to stay back.
I want to let you in
but fear that might be
catastrophic.

Saltwater rivers
Pool of broken dreams,
saltwater rivers of pain and loss;
reflect my reality back at me
as a mirror for my conscience
and a fount of truth.
Is there a humble path to steer
between lifelong feelings of inadequacy
and the ugly superiority complex
that now emerges in my reflection?
Saltwater, cleanse and purify.
Crystalline mirror, enlighten me.
I will wait, as I stare into your depths.
I will leave my burdens here.
Long, you have existed because of my pain
and I bring it here again—
not happy...

The Inside of my Eyelids
My friend told me to write about the inside of my eyelids
after conducting thorough research on the subject.
Always up for a challenge, I immediately read up on eyes;
or at least tried to, squinting with one of mine against a ferocious migraine;
the other one shut tight.
Now, I'm not normally one to miss people's intended layers of meaning,
but I'm tired and spent after a stressful couple of days.
I was all ready with my smart-arse comments about
conjunctiva and sclera and blood vessels...
but apparently I was meant to thoroughly research the...
