Wolf
He drifted ghost like through the dark forest
Until he came to the hunters camp.
He smelt her on the wind, smelt her blood
Saw that she was no more
He turned and climbed to the high spot
And in the moonlight the timber wolf
Howled his pain, his sorrow, his loss.

On a jumbled pile of rock
I dropped a stone
Gravity called
It leapt into a gap
I listened to it tumble
Down through the jumble
Responding to random chance
Clink clink, clink
I never heard it come to rest
Maybe it tumbles yet
And maybe like it
I will never come to rest

Wind Pollination
The mischievous wind drifts almost aimlessly
Through soft, seductive veils and covers
Over hills and valleys curving sensuously
Over hidden places, under covers and over
Tangled mounds that lead down to a secret
Valley which, with tender words and gentle
Persuasion and especially sweet seduction
Can be turned at first into a gently flowing
Musky river that invites and welcomes
Old friends, new friends and even sometimes
Lucky, tempting, sweet spoken strangers
To play and tease and explore its folds
And sometime after gentle sighs...

Winter Chill
Icy winter wind
Enfolds my heart
In an icy grip
Of desperation.
And despair
The icy weight
Presses me down
Into darkness
Will it ever end
Will it never end
Why not now?
Take me now I plead
Begging the dark lords
So that I can be freed
And join the dead hordes
Shuffling away from here
Into sweet dark oblivion
Where there is no fear
Let me join that legion.
When winters ice is gone
Spring brings life again
I hope that you will pardon
Me for I'll be free of pain

The Crier
The Crier stands there, on the platform, overlooking the darkness, toward where our legends say, our saviour waits for a true soul to call him to wakefulness. The crier is a big man, full of life, but in a strange way, he and I are similar. He is to try just one more time to waken our Saviour with his "soul call". If he fails he may never return to try again. Tonight will be my last watch, the lung eaters that come out of the darkness have slowly but surely destroyed my lungs and now it is only time before I can no longer breath and I will pass on to my reward. NOTE: A qilin is a mythological Chinese creature that resembles a dragon and a horned creature.
The sage delicately took another piece of meat
From the plate before him
Pray tell me foreign child
What tasty meat is this?
I do not know

Dragon like maybe a
Bit of ox with antlers
The sage turned pale

That we have just eaten a Qilin?

The Rusting Billy
NOTE: Billy in this poem refers to a hiking pot.
On a lonely mountain path
A king protea stands
Charred, battered, old
I take the rusted billy
Rim and handle from
The worn branch
Gently crush them
Into a new billy
And hang it on the
Same old branch
He hung it there and
Went to war.
"I'll fetch it when I'm
Back"
The billy lasted
Thirty years
We bow our heads
"Rest in peace.
You are not forgotten"
