POEMS AND SHORT STORIES
Poet Introduction
I'm a work in progress.
white woman takes on politics
There are some who want the wall
They want to build it thick and tall
They fear the drugs that come across
And death that comes from cartel boss
And there are some who hate the wall
Cannot believe some have the gall
To let kids starve in wired cells
To kick down those who’ve been through hell
They say there’s human trafficking
Raping those in caravan ring
Not a crisis some would...
They want to build it thick and tall
They fear the drugs that come across
And death that comes from cartel boss
And there are some who hate the wall
Cannot believe some have the gall
To let kids starve in wired cells
To kick down those who’ve been through hell
They say there’s human trafficking
Raping those in caravan ring
Not a crisis some would...

The Jewish Question
she was a good friend of mine
from college in western maryland
we studied theatre and sign language
the wedding invitation arrived
my heart swelled with joy
a normal reaction
why I felt this joy
was unexpected
in all the years I knew her
i was the catholic friend
she didn’t know
my ancestry ...

Competition
backstage
girls spritzed
last drops of hairspray
and final application of red
lipstick
stage lights
burning
makeup sweating
off my face
after lining up
she turned to me
don't ruin this for us
we've been training
a year
for this
music starting
with one last look
over her shoulder
if you fall on your face
I'll try not to laugh

Five Words I’ll tell You on your Deathbed
It was a school day;
sitting in the McDonald’s drive-thru.
You asked if I wanted a happy meal;
I was seventeen.
“Don’t you want the toy?”
I stared out the window.
I want
nothing
from you.
The parking lot was vacant.
“You should've kept your mouth
shut,” you said. ...

Samantha
just a knock-off bag and one old yellow suitcase
hair unkempt and belt too big for her waist
nobody said she could ever make it
just a city girl living paycheck to paycheck
if you could only imagine
how it feels to be her
city girl with no direction
carving her place in this world
she told me this life wasn’t for me
to get out while I had the chance
city girl always running around
city girl doesn’t wanna be found
just imagine her mascara ...

Allergies
weeds always grew thick there
where puddles collected
from dirty rain
drowning worms
between my toes
as I reflected
mud blanketed my innocence
my nakedness hidden in earth
silent screams seemed
just beneath the surface
trees forever crooked
where you threw
me against
the bark
bees buzzed
there where the weeds grew
high and itched my ankles
yet I couldn’t help but cry too
in nowhere
where puddles collected
from dirty rain
drowning worms
between my toes
as I reflected
mud blanketed my innocence
my nakedness hidden in earth

La Morenita
constellations envelope you
La Morenita
your feet upon the moon
Virgen María
winged angels carry thee
coal belt revealing
virginity and pregnancy
la Morenita
thy crown of stars
and downcast gaze
with hands intertwined
teach us your ways
glorified patroness
of bronzed flesh
who spoke the tongue of natives
a mother’s love you give
la Morenita
sought roses in winter
emblazoned on tilma
thy Aztec allure
queen of mestizos
who chose Juan...

Lost Boy
in a strange land
on fine white sand
I see you
walking in Perdido
Blue Angels above
trailing their love
I see you
dreaming in Perdido
scaling war forts
in bermuda shorts
I see you
climbing Perdido
Faulkner
words blur
I hear you
breathing Perdido
outside my window
winter’s first snow
I feel you
touch Perdido
I see you
drinking in Perdido
I know
your shadow
on fine white sand
I see you

Man in Uniform
Inspecting fruit at the grocer
on a Sunday afternoon
I didn’t want to bother you
though I wanted to thank you for your service
I let you have some peace
Most people don’t think to say it
a sign of the times
where comedians mock
war injuries of soldiers in Afghanistan
and POW’s —
This is America now.

The Fence
unexploded ordinance
blasting through four walls
to the basement
a mother clutching her babies
to her breast:
“the Americans.”
her husband crossed a mine field
to reach the border fence —
Sopron was no longer home.
Now is Revolution.
in Estelí a man raised by the land
forced to swim in blood of brothers slain
an uneasy mixture
sandinistas and contras
and foreign interference:
“the Americans”
Now is Revolution.
Red Cross truck carried his family
to Vienna...

Boxing in the Icebox
Frost embeds my lips
Silence is deadly
No need for poison
I am a far greater enemy
Your rage fire met with quips
And monotone medley
Your only sin
Was trusting me
Your cheeks rose hips
as you gaze over debris
I’m a wolf in sheepskin
Wouldn’t you agree?
Your hatred drips
at my passivity
Ice queen enters in —
You should have let me be.

Purgatory
The garden gate to heaven
Is through a cornfield
Stalking through desecrated husks
Of past indiscretions and sins
Trampling empty shells
Of insect memories
A few good golden ears left
Those pure joys in life so rare
Seeking to hold tight to
The right choices made
The garden gate to heaven
Is through a cornfield
The question remains
How to escape the maize
Is through a cornfield
Stalking through desecrated husks
Of past indiscretions and sins
Trampling empty shells
Of insect memories
A few good golden ears left
Those pure joys in life so rare
Seeking to hold tight to
The right choices made

How to escape the maize
