Better Luck Next Time, Player
My turn to shuffle
While mentally
Keeping track of
Well hidden thoughts
And gazes
And longings,
A honed
(And painfully learned)
Poker face
Of nonchalance
Crucial
To keeping my seat in
(But what have I ever gained by this?)
Regardless, it's all a game
It's always a game
She deals a mean hand
Four leaf clovers
And rabbit's feet
Have never helped me win
Against Fate
Likewise Chance isn't sporting
And doesn't seem to want
To give me

New Order
Aftershocks from that
Earth-shattering phone call
Continue to rattle
The walls of my mind
Five months later,
and counting
I can't remember
If I was
Waking from a dream
Or falling into one,
But I swear I held on
Tooth and nail
To the hope
Of a nightmare's end
That never came
Pleas and tears
In those long nights
Fell on seemingly
Otherwise occupied ears
And echoed
Into the ceiling
Reflecting, I'm left here
Shivering
As the...

Dreams you'll never know
< about >
which way my intention lies
A brush of the hand
close behind
A revelation
best left forgotten,
A casualty
of 13.
You can't even tell where the scar used to be now.
I still meant what I said
Regardless of attention starved
coulda woulda shoulda beens.

Swallows, half covered by blankets
Highlighted by the morning sun
I could I almost hear them singing
As your chest rose and fell
Coffee scent drifted in
The radio alarm disturbed the scene
Of your unusually still form
And soft expression
Loud yawns and superman stretches
Scared the cat, and made us laugh
Now the room feels quiet and empty
An unwelcoming former haven
I think of you on cold mornings
Shivering, and snuggled up to me
We'd be each other's warmth
We were each other's...

Lost at Sea
Could we stay here at the surface
Where I know what's going on
Nothing deeper than the shore
And my feet still feel the sand
Could we keep our heads above water
Where I still can feel the sun
It's so bright and there's no mystery
A beautiful numbing effect
Could we go back to the shallows
I confess, I'm getting scared
Things are happening too fast
And the tide pays me no mind
Could we paddle towards that driftwood
Looks to be the one reprieve
From the sea of life that rages ...

Walk away
Lighter twirling
Cigarette smoke
Wind-stung cheeks
Perhaps tomorrow
Heavy sigh
I can't even
Convince myself.
I tried, I say
(that's a new one)
But no fruit
From this vine
Dancing leaf
Cloudy sky
Maybe rain
(in my heart)
Rejection stings
Wield the whip
Another please
Another drag
Maybe later
Lighter twirling
Heavy sigh
Another drag

I thought I was holding up well
But you always had a way of getting to me
I wanted to be anywhere else in the world
Like an itchy wool sweater given as a loathed present
I had to bear it with the rest
College thesis spoken from pseudo intellectuals
Easing the pain like salt in a wound
Give me another dose when she mentioned my name
I ran hard and fast
(In my mind)
Away from the ritualistic crowd
Searching for childhood innocence in a time long since past
Music was the stumbling block that sent me crashing back
Like belated resurfacing...
