What has happened to society
What has happened to society?
Oh how I miss the olden days
When people helped everyone else
Now no-one does anything for nothing
People are just out for themselves
I remember the close-knit communities
Doing favours for one another
When people had respect
For their father and their mother
It breaks my heart to think about
How much times have changed
Family-life a thing of the past
And kin-folk are estranged
What has happened to family values
And care in the community?

The good old days
The Good Old Days
Take me back to the good old days
When we were grateful for what we had
Now people have much more than they need
And society has gone bad
Greed is the keyword and money their God
Everyone out for themselves
I remember a time when we thought we were rich
If we had food on our shelves
People have to keep up with the Joneses'
Bigger house, bigger car, better job
But trying to keep up with the Joneses’
Just makes people think they're a snob
They look down their nose at ones poorer than them ...

Missing
MISSING
Today she walked into your room
And saw your empty chair
It has not sunk in yet
That you are no longer there
She thinks of the good times you had
Your laughter and your smile
Your kindness and affection
Your inimitable style
You were never one to judge
Treated everyone the same
When someone had a problem
It was to you they always came
Always a good listener
A true and loyal friend
All who encountered you
Knew on you they could depend
Six months have passed, Six...

My Bus Journey
My Bus Journey
Getting on the bus to go into town
Ten passengers standing up, twenty sitting down
The card reader's faulty, won't recognise my bus pass
Youths standing at the bus stop banging on the glass
Unaccompanied children, probably going to gran's
Elderly couple opposite, sitting holding hands
Driver says he's running late and that he can't delay
Gives me no time to find a seat, before he's on his way
Can't find an empty disabled seat, even though I have a stick
Able-bodied people stay sitting in them, looking...

Grandma's Pets
Grandma's Pets
My granda went away to sea
For many months on end
He'd travel on a fishing boat
With his brother and a friend
He used to write home regularly
And tell some quite tall tales
About being in a far-away place
When he was actually in Wales
Once they actually went to Africa
He wrote he was bringing Gran a pet
When he came home with a small cage
He'd brought her a marmoset
He opened up the cage
And up the curtains it did run
The curtains tore, granda laughed,
Grandma...

Pills for all ills
Pills for all ills
Here are my bottles filled with pills
Which doctors claim can cure all ills
Amoxicillin for ear, nose and throat
They've never worked for me
So they don't get my vote
Mirtazapine to keep me calm
Works better than a herbal balm
Ramipril for high blood pressure
Taken each morning in five milligram measure
Cod Liver Oil capsules to loosen up limbs
It's a thing of the past me going to gym's
Codeine for muscle pain taken each night
Restless Leg Syndrome, a terrible plight

Baby Blues
Baby Blues
Tom considered himself a very lucky man
His girlfriend, Sally, was pregnant, going for a 20 week scan
They decided they wanted to know the sex,
and Tom’s heart was filled with joy
When the Stenographer proudly announced
That they were having a boy
When they left the hospital, Sally seemed in a daze
She’d told Tom that she longed for a girl
And Tom thought it was just a phase
She was filled with disappointment
And a deep-seated flood of guilt
She could clearly see that Tom

The Empty Nest
The Empty Nest
What shall we do today?
Now the nest is empty
Not as much washing to do
When the kids lived at home there was plenty
Shall we go out for a meal?
A two-for-one meal deal will do
Instead of the usual bargain bucket
Which would feed a slew
Chicken wings and coleslaw and fries
And a large tub of chocolate ice-cream
Drew would eat more than his fair share
His love of fast food was extreme
When we get home from the restaurant
I'll look in the boys bedroom door
And i'll...

Who cares for the carer?
Who cares for the carer?
My door is always open
My kettle is always on
I’m here with a shoulder
For you to cry upon
You can tell me anything
Your secrets I can keep
You can phone me anytime, day or night
Even when I am asleep
If you live in solitude
Or your heart is filled with grief
If you suffer from low self-esteem
I can build your self-belief
I am everybody’s rock
But who is there for me?
Who cares for the carer?
I think you will agree
The more you do for...

I'm Still Here
I'm Still Here
Why do you talk about me
As if I am not here?
I' m the person that you've always known
Sitting in this well-worn armchair
My mind may not be what it was
My memories of the past locked away
Why can't you make eye-contact?
Why do you keep looking away?
I may forget important dates
But then you do too
Do you think I don't get embarrassed?
Needing help to go to the loo
Sometimes I get really confused
Putting things in an unusual place
And then when I can't find them
My steps I...

What will they do with Grandma?
What will they do with Grandma?
What will they do with Grandma, now that she is old?
No longer able to fend for herself, by her home-help they've been told
She's always been there for her children but now none of them want to know
Keeping a roof over all of their heads, not all that long ago
She's been the peacemaker for all of her kids, when relationships hit a bad patch
They've all forgotten just how much she did, though their partners she thought a mismatch
She put home-cooked food on their tables when their cupboards all were bare
Helped...

Lizzie
Lizzie
Each and every day, Lizzie opens up a can,
Of tasty Salmon cat food for her beloved tabby Dan,
She's lived alone since Harry died, a victim of world war two,
Neighbours live at either side, but she's no idea who,
She remembers in the olden days, when people cared for one another,
Her many years, devoted carer for her father then her mother,
Her memory is not the same, a symptom of old age,
Each day in her past is just another page,
Everyday she takes her pills, the doctor says they'll cure her ills,
Red are for her...
