Stay Awake
Your cheek is softly touching mine
Your hands reach over to my side
Your breath pushing my hair back
Pushing back all those thoughts of being alone
Pulling forward my music to mix with yours
Touching your soul with mine
Our hands colliding in the rain
Your arms around me moving slow again
Please don’t forget my name when the clock strikes 8
Please don’t look away when I leave this state
Your hair is tangling with mine
Your feet shift so mine fit in between
Your voice pushing warm whispers into my brain

The music in my head is what keeps me moving keeps me going
Away from that city where things got cold an dirty
You know only you could look at the way you do
With your eyes you turn my insides black and blue
Let me out just let me out
I hear you yell those things or see you pull my strings
I’m thinking that you want to get tough and play rough
But I’m just gonna get my things and go

But you’re still calling
And I’m not answering
Now I have to turn away from the pain you throw at me
Now that we’ve both just fell apart
And have un-mended hearts
Oh Ann Elizabeth, when you call I’m torn apart
There is so much anger in your voice
I turn my head sideways and try to find the part that used to carry me home
Home to you
So then you stopped calling
And I don’t have to worry about answering
Now I wonder how much of me is left after collecting your arrows
Now that we’ve both started walking away
And left so many bruises...
And I’m not answering

She Took My Courage
We watched our streets turn from stone to blood
We watched our friends turn from love to fear
The skies they blackened with long nights of endless screaming
The trees they crept around in the background beckoning
Take my hand and take it now
The conversation has to disappear
Let the words remain just thoughts in your head
As we run from the damages and wreckage of our lives
Light and sound and don’t forget sight
All but dismiss the ricochet around our truth

We walked past it everyday
Never looking twice
We would be laughing, talking, counting our steps
My brother and I
There was always music playing
Didn’t really think about it
We would be holding hands, whispering secrets

I think now about the treasures we’d find
Stuffed in pockets
We would have our hands full of things

One day we’d walk past it one last time
Not allowed to look back
We would be crying, whimpering, counting our steps

Your journey has been long but full of hope
Even when the darkness carried shards of fire
Setting your world ablaze as you run through
All the ways you know how to cope
White ricochets as you fall to your knees
But all that I’m saying is lift your head high
There is a sort of haunting melody
That comes with the way you see things
Don’t you know you’ll never be alone though
Don’t you know you can find a way home
You’ve only tried to do what’s right
When all you could see was the silent screams
Searing into your skull as you hide in...

The Separation
I’ll take a long walk
Down the cold concrete alleys
Passing a few spray painted images
Semi permanent
I’ll reach out to touch them
Palm flat on the white stone
Trembling from fast dip in temperature
Lingering snowflakes
I’ll know better tomorrow
After I wake up from
Running in my dreams, but never fast enough
Fleeting
I’ll wander through these corridors
Up and down stained walls
Breathing what I don’t recognize
Stagnant air
I’ll lean out of the window
Up high wishing I was far far away
Looking out over the rooftops...

The Bass that Settled in You
You’re arms around me come undone
I see them spreading out flinging wide
You’ve become a gorilla in the darkness
Pounding your chest so deep and bitter
I cover my ears but I still hear it in my bones
It brings me to my knees with a quake
I know you’re hurting and I know you’re burning
Hot and cold, I know why you’re crying
Your eyes please don’t look away
Make me see what I already know
The pain you feel is so real and deep it touches mine
With a deep resounding thump
As it sinks to my core
Filling my legs
With a thunderous boom...

The Danger That Comes at Love’s End
You tear me apart
There’s nothing left and I’m falling
Falling faster through the waters that drown
Your words bite my flesh and sink to the bone
Where nothing remains and I’m sinking
Sinking deeper through the darkness
That you’ve become
One minute and you hit the switch
Your eyes were soft and now they harbor daggers
Dangerous, so dangerous
You’ve already taken everything
And still you thirst for more
You’re playing hard

Now, The Night
When I was young, the night was far too long
With too many demons creeping in the stillness
With too many dragons breathing in the darkness
When I was young, the night brought black horses
All of them nicknamed ‘night’
Now the night is not long enough
I lay next to her and weep
Knowing all I have is her sleep
Now the night slaps the dawn awake
And pulls the covers back to light the day

I fly to you everyday
On wings of paper, wings of gray
